Conservation of Natural Resources

We should be proud of our country’s natural bounty and unique bio-diversity. India is amongst the rare countries where major biomes of the world are represented. India is one among the twelve countries where 60-70% of the world’s total biodiversity exists. India has two out of the 18 biodiversity hot spots in the world. India has rich traditional knowledge and wisdom in the conservation of nature and natural resources. Religious beliefs, culture and folklore have together treated nature and environment with sanctity. Conservation and protection of environment and love for nature have always been part and parcel of Indian ethos and culture. Independent India has traveled a long way on the path of progress and industrialization in order to achieve better quality of life. We have accelerated the process of development without considering the adverse impact on nature and environment. The development without care for environment has posed threats to the very existence of life itself. Now the realization that mere progress and economic development cannot solve all our problems has increased. Development and environment should go hand in hand. Sustainable development is the new paradigm. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has drawn many programmes and policies to combat these problems. Steps are being taken to preserve the pristine eco-systems through establishment of Wildlife Sanctuaries, National Parks and Biosphere Reserves. More and newer areas are being brought into-the protected areas status. At the same time, steps have been †¢taken for welfare of the forest people, particularly the tribals, who have lived in the forests for centuries and who are also repository of traditional knowledge on conservation and sustainable utilization. The National Museum of Natural History is an important institutional tool for spreading awareness on the evolution of our Universe and life on it. It has played a strong and active role in creating environmental awareness. I am happy to say that the Museum has been active in creating such awareness hrough a number of educational programmes, exhibitions, nature camps etc. for more than two-and-a-half decades. Today, the Museum and its Regional Centres are recognized as the centres for non-formal environmental education. It is indeed a pleasure for all of us to be celebrating the 25th Year of the Foundation of the Museum. I am happy to see that a number of children have participated in various activities of the Museum. These activities will help all of you in developing a sense of environmental responsibility, which is so essential in our every day life. It is the absence of this responsibility which is causing problems on our streets, residential areas, market places and other public places. This leaves you all – responsible citizens of tomorrow, with a great burden to shoulder. But I am confident that you have the capacity not merely of shouldering this burden but also influencing people much older to you in following environmental discipline. I wish the officers and staff of National Museum of Natural History the very best in their future endeavour. I would like to thank and congratulate Prof. Yash Pal who has delivered his Key-note on the relevant theme. We need such scientists who could contribute to spread scientific temper among masses which will eventually lead to betterment of their lives and better understanding of the delicate web of life that exists on this only planet known to sustain life. I congratulate the winners of Awards for Prevention of Pollution, Rajiv Gandhi Award for Clean Technology and Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar. The awardees for the best original writings in Hindi on environmental issues also deserve my special appreciation for their efforts in popularization of environmental issues in the official languages. There is dearth of such literature in the regional languages. The Ministry will encourage other regional languages also which will help to take the environmental message to the grass root levels, across the country. I am personally grateful to our Hon’ble Vice President, Thiru. Shekhawatji to have accepted the invitation to grace the occasion. I know that he is keenly interested in the issues related to environment. His own State of Rajasthan is an example of all climate adversities, yet you can see maximum vibrancy of all forms of life that exist there including those of fellow citizens.

Un Kyoto Protocol

What is the Kyoto  Protocol? The  Kyoto Protocol  is an amendment to the  United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change  (UNFCCC), an international treaty intended to bring countries together to reduceglobal warming  and to cope with the effects of temperature increases that are unavoidable after 150 years of industrialization. The provisions of the Kyoto Protocol are legally binding on the ratifying nations, and stronger than those of the UNFCCC.Countries that ratify the Kyoto Protocol agree to reduce emissions of six greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, HFCs and PFCs. The countries are allowed to use emissions trading to meet their obligations if they maintain or increase their greenhouse gas emissions The Kyoto Protocol sets specific emissions reduction targets for each industrialized nation, but excludes developing countries. To meet their targets, most ratifying nations would have to combine several strategies:   * place restrictions on their biggest polluters manage transportation to slow or reduce emissions from automobiles * make better use of renewable energy sources—such as solar power, wind power, and biodiesel—in place of fossil fuels Background The Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997. It was opened for signature on March 16, 1998, and closed a year later. Under terms of the agreement, the Kyoto Protocol would not take effect until 90 days after it was ratified by at least 55 countries involved in the UNFCCC. Another condition was that ratifying countries had to represent at least 55 percent of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions for 1990.The first condition was met on May 23, 2002, when Iceland became the 55th country to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. When Russia ratified the agreement in November 2004, the second condition was satisfied, and the Kyoto Protocol entered into force on February 16, 2005. As a U. S. presidential candidate, George W. Bush promised to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Shortly after he took office in 2001, however, President Bush withdrew U. S. support for the Kyoto Protocol and refused to submit it to Congress for ratification. Rationale of UNFCCC and the Kyoto ProtocolThe ultimate objective of this Convention and any related legal instruments that the Conference of the Parties may adopt is to achieve, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Convention, stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. Such a level should be achieved within a time-frame sufficient to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally to climate change, to ensure that food production is not threatened and to enable economic development to proceed in a sustainable manner.Concluding Remarks While international agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol are certainly a step in the right direction in that they raise awareness about the severity of global climate change, they are not a complete solution and will not solve the problem alone. Real results and improvements will be seen when fundamental reductions in energy consumption and changes in lifestyle are achieved on an individual level across the globe. Continue by reading about  What You Can Do  to contribute towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving your lifestyle. The Effectiveness of the Kyoto Protocol Kyoto Protocol has several provisions and established mechanisms concerning technology transfer which is supposed to favoring technology transfer for reducing the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the world. However, mainly due to the flaws of the provisions and mechanisms, the environmentally sound technologies have not been transferred as smoothly as possible to realize the Kyoto Protocol’s objectives. Therefore, the international community shall take the effectiveness o f Kyoto Protocol as a fresh impetus to consummate the legal system of international technology transfer, that is, developing a uniform technology transfer agreement under the WTO with a focus on promoting environmentally sound technology, which may make the developing countries to acquire the technologies they need under the fair conditions and help them build their capacities to develop in a sustainable manner. China does not need to perform the obligation of reducing GHG emission until 2013 according to Kyoto Protocol, but recautions shall be taken to improve its legal systems on technology transfer to make preparations for implementing the policy of scientific development and playing roles in related international legislation. Impact on Spain of Meeting the Kyoto Commitment in 2008-2012 Impact on Delivered Prices to Households and Industry Meeting the Kyoto Protocol target in 2008-2012 through a combination of domestic actions plus purchases of international credits would increas e the price of home heating oil by more than 32%. Consumers would also pay more for gasoline and diesel. If the Spain participates in the Kyoto Protocol’s economy-wide emission reduction program, prices for industry would rise dramatically. Spanish industries would pay more than 42% more for natural gas and 24% more for electricity than under the baseline projection. Under the assumption that the Kyoto Protocol’s emission targets are made even more stringent in the post-2012 period, the impact on household heating oil prices would rise to more than 43% above the baseline estimate by 2025. Gasoline and diesel prices would rise substantially, between 15-19% by 2025.Impact on Energy Consumption In general, the percentage reduction in energy demand would not need to be as large as the required percentage reduction in carbon emissions because not all Btus of energy have the same carbon content. Additionally, purchase of international CO2 credits means that foreign CO2 reduct ions lessen the need for domestic reductions, thereby avoiding some domestic reductions in energy used. However, use of international credits does have consequences, as companies pass the cost of the international credit onto final consumers of energy via higher prices.Implementation of a limit on carbon dioxide emissions via an international carbon dioxide allowance trading system would result in the following impacts. November 2005 Global Insight, Inc. Page 12 Domestic Sector: The dramatically higher energy prices would force consumers to cut their consumption of energy. Since there is only limited opportunity to substitute more energy efficient appliances and furnaces for the period 2008- 2012, consumers would reduce their consumption of energy services. Longer term, consumers would attempt to replace some of these services by replacing their energy consuming equipment.Industry Sector: Industry would respond to the dramatically higher prices through several mechanisms. First, ind ustry would reduce energy consumption through process change. Second, industry would replace energy-consuming capital with more efficient capital. Third, to the extent possible, production of energy intensive goods would move to non-participating countries. Power Sector: The power sector would be hard hit under these scenarios. The imposition of carbon permits would lead to extremely large increases in the delivered price of electricity, particularly to the industrial sector.Imposition of ever decreasing carbon permit levels would set in motion dramatic changes in this sector. Coal use would decline, slowly at first and then rapidly, as the price drove electricity prices up reducing demand and encouraging the substitution of natural gas or renewables. Investment in natural gas fired generating capacity would alleviate some of the pressure on electricity prices, but with the ever increasing stringency of the target, investment in end-use efficiency would need to be as great or greate r than improvements in power supply efficiency.Transportation Sector: The impact on the transportation sector would be significant. However, due to the high taxes already in place on transportation fuels, the percentage change in price due to the addition of the carbon permit fees is less than the change in price in other sectors. Longer run, the permit price would have to be high enough to reduce energy use in this sector as the target tightens. Even assuming an international carbon dioxide emission allowance trading scheme, meeting the Kyoto targets would result in the following: ? Coal, with the highest carbon content of the energy sources, would be the hardest hit. Petroleum would experience the smallest percentage decline of the fossil fuels because of strong demand and limited technology substitution options in the transportation sector over the forecast horizon. ? Natural gas demand would initially increase relative to the baseline as it is substituted for coal and petroleum but ultimately would need to decline as the cutbacks in demand outweigh this substitution effect. ? The demand for renewables would increase in all the cases. ? For this analysis, it was assumed that nuclear and hydroelectric energy would not change.Economic Impacts Output and employment losses would be expected under the Kyoto Protocol because: energy-using equipment and vehicles would be made prematurely obsolete; consumers would be rattled by rapid increases in living costs; and financial ministers would most likely need to target more slack in the economy to deflate non-energy prices and thus stabilize the overall price environment. The analysis assumes that the cost of emission allowances would be passed along to consumers in the form of higher energy prices and ultimately high prices for all goods and services.Consumers’ purchasing power would be reduced by the higher cost of using energy, reducing real disposable income. Consumption and residential fixed investment wou ld be the hardest hit components of real GDP because of the direct loss in real disposable income. The short period to phase in the permit prices (2005-2008) would lead to substantial declines in real consumption from Base Case levels in the 2008-12 period. Imports would strengthen relative to Base Case levels, spurred by the competitive price advantage of non-participating Annex B countries, and non-Annex B countries. Real GDP would fall 3. % (26 billion Euros) on average below Base Case levels during the 2008-12 budget period, and 4. 3% (48 billion Euros) below in 2025 under Case 1 and 5. 6% (63 billion Euros) below under Case 2. The economy’s potential to produce would fall below Base Case levels initially with the cut back in energy usage, since energy is a key factor of production. Stronger investment would be required over the longer-term to build capital as a substitute for this lost factor. The decline in consumption and residential fixed investment relative to Base C ase levels, however, would have a depressing impact on business fixed investment in the near-term.Annual employment losses are projected to be 611,000 jobs in 2010 in the Spain The percentage reduction in employment relative to Base Case levels would be less than the drop in output. This is due to an increase in the labor-to-output ratio (or a decline in labor productivity) attributed to the permit program. Labor productivity would decline because the other factors of production would be less efficient. Only as investment grows and the capital stock is expanded would productivity begin to improve.Post 2012, if the target emission level under the Kyoto Protocol is maintained, the impact on economic performance would begin to lessen. The extreme change in the energy prices experienced during the years between 2008 and 2012 would not be repeated. While the percentage change in prices relative to the baseline would increase somewhat, the year-over-year change in prices would be reduced. However, achieving even more aggressive targets would take ever larger carbon fees, and would continue to take a significant toll on economic performance. http://www. studymode. com/essays/The-Kyoto-Protocol-Business-Ethics-202293. html

Global Managerial Essay

Debt crisis of 1980 was quite significant in a number of ways. First it enabled the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to gain a visible role in managing its crisis. The crisis also played quite substantial role in financial crisis of Asians. IMF is criticized by many observers because of its ability to handle cases related to debt crisis but all in all this institution finally helped in resolving the acute phase of the debt crisis. The fund brought together the commercial banks, countries with debt and other issues which were involved in the crisis. Various involvements of MIF in their development issues were also illustrated by the debt crisis. The value of existence of IMF was greatly facilitated by the debt crisis. There are quite a number of social cost which arisen as a result of debt crisis of 1980. Debt crisis during this period eventually wiped out all the efforts which were made to reduce poverty within those countries which owned debts (Carrasco R. 2008). Global managerial entails shifting of management from being managed by the national state to being managed by the global institution. This shifting can be either absolute or not. Various institutions that are managed nationally usually embrace various global goals. The state need to adopt various procedures and policies so that they can achieve better global managerial since it entirely needs to be developed from within but not to be adopted from other countries. This usually helps in relocating producers in various global economies. This managerial basically recognizes global managerial in all parts of the world but not just in some specific parts. The debt crisis of 1980 was basically viewed as crisis for banking which left out other national economies to give various feedbacks which could else be challenging to the state’s development. Since debt crisis was entirely treated as banking crisis brought about global fin. This time of debt crisis physically brought a lot of challenges to various state developments. This resulted to rise of the social spending and various state enterprises were finally privatized as a result of these crisis. During the debt crisis regime, two trends were incorporated in the crisis which had emerged in 1970s. First economic growth diverged among the states which were affected by the crisis after they underwent the 3W as collective entities (Macesich 1996). Then the world economy was managed through global managerial and management strategies which were used were coordinated through procedures based on various rules which were used to solve out various management issues. During this regime various terms debts were rescheduled by most of the countries which made them not to pay for their dues as if was required. Therefore, these debts over extended and this made many countries which were being affected by the debt crisis. The debt crisis started to grow in early 80’s which was led by growing countries which earned a lot of money earned as a result of oil that they exported to other countries. This led to these countries having extra money which brought about idea of rendering the money to other countries which did not have a lot of income. These countries which had extra money as a result of sale of oil deposited their extra money into western banks which realized that most of the countries had a lot of money which was not freely circulating but it was only invested in banks (Baird 2006). This money was lead to the third world countries by the bank so that they could initiate various development projects which could consequently boost their status to produce more money and the banks believed that since the money was lead out for development projects, they will consequently pay with a lot of interest. Due to some factors which arose such as global recession, increased would interest rate and low prices of commodities eventually made a lot of debts to grow quite fast and therefore these countries begun to fail in the payment of their debts which made them to result in owning large amount of debts from the bank. The money which was loaned to those developing countries increased significantly during the early 1980’s. These countries since they were unable to pay their debts, they continued to owe money from World Bank, IMF and to other first world government which had invested their money in those bank. Therefore due to these huge debts owned by developing countries, the debts crisis arose. In quite simple terms, debt crisis arose as a result of debts owned by the third world countries. These debt crises kept on growing since these countries were unable to repay the debts that they owned from the banks. Most of the loans which are owned by the third world countries in most cases are repaid using hard currency which are quite stable and therefore their value to not keep on changing in most countries (Watkin 1995). Most developing countries usually use soft currencies which usually deteriorate the value with time and therefore it’s no very much applicable in paying the debts and therefore the debts owned by the country eventually rises. The values of debts kept growing which makes the export to decrease and the value of most of the commodities to consequently go down this has brought a lot of problems in paying back the loans they owned. Most of the Europeans countries were involved in various debt crises which were quite huge such that they could not be waved. Various institutions such as commercial banks facilitated the adverse growth of the debt crisis. Due to rapid development of the crisis, IMF played quite a major role in helping to solve various crises. It acted as a loophole for those countries which were heavy laden by debts but it was unable to solve various problems such as economic problem, societal and also political problems. Despite of its great effort to solve the crisis it failed in carrying out those measures. Debt crisis contributed greatly to global changes which are meant to control various economic services associated with the debt crisis and these economic policies are usually globally managed by which government is meant to adopt various policies which are usually presented by various global institution which are usually designed in regard to globe instead of national consideration which has consequently lead to erosion third world state’s sovereignty (Thedani 2006). Most of these countries acquired debts after borrowing money in late 1970’s and faced quite a number of difficulties in repaying the debts. After the debtors who were basically the banks made various negotiations in regard to the debts condition after they were equally accepted by the global management and they also had overview of the policies in regard to national economy. The countries which owned various debts developed financial power of world wide multilateral institutions which gave them powers to have concession from the state which helped them to pay their debts (Loxley 1998). It paying for their debts, it was required of them to adopt to move policies which were economic so that they can have strategies of repaying for their debts. During this time of debt crisis, various terms of economic managements were reformulated which enabled powers to be shifted from third world state towards various global agencies. The banking institutions which were involved in debt crisis to allocate powers onto themselves which were meant to regulate unprecedented power. In the rise of debt crisis, people believed that it rose to due to many factors. Some of those who observed the rise of debt crisis believed that petrodollar recycling which occurred during 1970’s resulted to these debt crises. This period is known to have had high oil prices which had risen drastically. Many of the countries which exported oil such as Middle East countries had a lot of profit which made them to invest large sum of money in various banking institutions especially in European and United State banks. These banks wanted to make profit for those countries which needed loans and this facilitated to them being led large sums of money which was not consequently repaid. Most of the developing countries by them wanted to borrow large sums of money so that they could boost their development projects. They believed that this money was relatively cheap and that they could be able to repay it without any problems. The debts kept on increasing and these people were finally unable to repay the debts which resulted to debt crisis of 1980. After this period of borrowing money from various banking institutions the export decreased and the internet rate increased significantly during the period in early 1980s. Due to this decrease, debtors consequently defeated in paying their debts to those banking institutions and therefore the country’s owner of money felt that they needed their money due to the decreased export. Giving out of these loans and borrowing of loans by the developing countries came to an end in 1980’s with global recession. The debtor countries had experienced quite a significant drop in their exports, and at the same time dollar value increased more than the value of other currencies which were used by other countries (Effros 1989). Interest rate globally increased foreign exchange which was reserved for debtors depleted and therefore these countries only looked upon the help from the various transactions which resulted from the international finances. Those debtor countries strained a lot in making arrangements to pay for their debts which was quite expensive for those countries since the money that they had received from these banking institutions had floating rates of interest which consequently increased with relative increase in global rates. Those who were active participant of the debt crisis included-government from both third world countries and those from developing countries, World Bank, banking institutions such as commercial bank and the IMF (Thedani 2006). As a result of their negotiation in regards to the debt crisis they made the international finances to collapse since they did not come in terms when negotiating for the means of payment of those debts since the currency was not stable and it kept on depreciating in value. The debt crisis caused a lot of strain on the social cost which lead to development of the lost decade those who were involved in debt crisis and also various observers and a negative attitude towards World Bank and IMF because of the way that they handled the debt crisis. Their criticism was quite similar to that of financial crisis which developed among the Asians. These banking institutions finally came up with stable way of dealing with the crisis since they came up with adjustment program by coming up with high prices in developing countries. Most of the developing countries contributed greatly to neoliberalism as a result of debt crisis (Pascual 2006). This is because these countries had to come up with their own ways of ensuring that they repay the debts that they owned with their own companies so that they could eventually raise money to repay their debts on. Those companies which were established by the developing countries, when they were unable to repay the debts that they owned they gave shares to those countries who had given the loans so that they could be part of the shareholders and they believed that this would help them in retrieving back their money. In conclusion, the debts owned by the third world countries cannot be repaid by those countries which are under developed loans which are rendered a fresh only increases the burden of debts in those countries and this can lead to future crisis arising and more also worsening since they will tighten the financial situation of the third world countries.

Ensuring Social Responsibility in Entreoreneurial Ventures Essay

Ensuring Social Responsibility in Entreoreneurial Ventures - Essay Example In fact, lately, the corporate world has been under so much pressure, criticism and scrutiny that being socially responsible, at least on paper, has become vital for the survival of almost all large and medium sized corporations. On the other hand, entrepreneurs who start a new company are less likely to have role models, well-defined principles, historical stories, and other such elements, which could help them, determine the ethical courses of action (Steyaert & Hjorth, 2004). It would be a huge mistake for the entrepreneur to assume that his or her social responsibility only is to maximize his or her own profits to the utmost level as dictated by Milton Freidman, Adam Smith and others. By focusing on the business, the entrepreneur would be able to produce more and sell more thus stimulating the local economy (Ziegler, 2011). The basic concepts of economics dictate that this will gradually increase the employment opportunities and any excess cash in the hands of the entrepreneur or its employees would be used for investment thus creating an upwards spiral of growth (Steyaert & Hjorth, 2006). ... The entire premise of entrepreneurial ventures is because entrepreneurs always find their window of opportunity when they fell that some stakeholder of the existing company is being exploited by the existing businesses (London & Morfopoulos, 2009; Ziegler, 2011). Therefore, the entrepreneur would decide to fill in gap to provide value and relief to those stakeholders and would make that particular aspect the competitive advantage of the business. The point here is that by having an unethical conduct or exploitation by the entrepreneur of any of the stakeholders of the business, whether its investors, suppliers, customers, distributors or others, the entrepreneur himself or herself will open up an opportunity for other risk takers to step up and fill that gap (Davidsson, 2005). For example, if an entrepreneur’s production and packaging of the product were harmful to the environment then it would be exploitation of the customers and the society. A bold risk taker who witnesses t he same will see this as on opportunity and jump in the business with the logo and mission of being more environmentally responsible and green (Steyaert & Hjorth, 2004). Obviously, he would charge a little premium for the same and take away all the customers, which are concerned with the environment thus putting a serious dent on the business of the first entrepreneur. Therefore, the point here is that any attempt towards being socially irresponsible or of the exploitation of the stakeholders will appear as an opportunity for other entrepreneurs who would quickly jump in and fill in the gap (Nicholls, 2006). As mentioned earlier that entrepreneurs usually operate under great stress and

Contracting and Procurement in Project Management- Phase 2 part 2DB Essay

Contracting and Procurement in Project Management- Phase 2 part 2DB - Essay Example It simply relates to fixed-price contracts that proffer for development payments. Although it utilizes a formula procedure, it is not planned to be a precise result of the cost of working capital. Its intention is to present general detection to the contractor’s cost of working capital below unstable contract conditions, financing strategies and the financial situation. The contracting officer should analysis the extent to which expenses has been acquired previous to the finalization of the contract operation. The evaluation should be comprised some condensed contractor risk on together the contract previous to finalization and the enduring piece of the contract. When charges have been acquired previous to the finalization, usually scrutinize the contract category risk to be in the small termination of the designated selection. If an extensive part of the costs has been acquired previous to finalization, the contracting officer can distribute a worth as low as 0 %, in spite of contract type.1 Now I will discuses how contract types allocate risk in state of above normal conditions. The contracting officer might allocate an advanced than normal value when there is significant contract type risk. These risks can: FMS sales where the contractor would be able to divulge that there are considerable risks above those typically presented in DoD contracts for comparable items; or A violent performance based imbursement agenda that adds to risk. Now I will elaborate how contract types allocate risk in state of below normal conditions. The contracting officer may allocate an inferior than usual value when the contract category risk is small. Indicators of this are: Why this contract? I have selected this type of contract because the software development company will be given enough time to develop the software. Because there is no incentive for them in developing this software early and the price of software development is fixed, so they can not

Human Resource Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 27

Human Resource Management - Essay Example It provides 8, 000 core products and its own-label sales account for half of total UK sales. In the financial year 2014, it boasted of  £43.6 billion revenue and  £2191m trading profit (Tesco PLC Annual Report 2014, 8). Its main purpose is â€Å"to make what matters better, together† (Tescoplc.com, 2015). This is achieved through commitment to its three main values: no one tries harder for customers, treat people the way they want to be treated and use our scale for good. It is headquartered in Hertfordshire, England under the slogan Every little helps and aims at providing cheaper prices, improved quality, stronger ranges and better services. However, it operates under harsh economic conditions especially as a result of the 2007 economic crisis and also a highly fragmented and competitive environment with its main competitors being Asda, Sainsbury, and Morrisons although small retailers like Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose are giving them tight competition in recent years (Anders on, 2015). Tesco has been undergoing a difficult time with stagnant sales, declining profits and in addition, a  £250m hole in profits leading to decline in its share prices. In the FY 2014, it experienced a revenue growth of 0.0% and sales growth of 0.5%. Its trading in UK declined by 3.6% whilst its employee retention rates dropped by 1% although they are still strong at 90% (Tesco Annual Report, 2014, 16). In light of this, it needs improvements on its training and development, reward strategy and employee relations. Training, learning and development are essential in any organisation wishing to have sustainable competitive advantage. Training provides and /or improves skills necessary for performance of job tasks whereas development is to enhance abilities of employee for greater long-term good of organisation. The purpose of training and development is to promote organisational performance (Uma, 2013, 137). Organisation learning is

Theories of punishment Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Theories of punishment - Term Paper Example Crime and punishment consider the philosophical concept of cause and effect. Crime causes suffering, pain, and losses to someone. Punishment also causes suffering, pain, and losses (â€Å"Crime†). Punishment is the effect in the form of penalty inflicted on an offender through a judicial procedure. Society imposes retribution on an individual who committed an act that public laws forbid. Society has numerous answers to the issue why an offender should be punished. Some of them are to stop them from committing further crimes, tell the victims that the society disapproves the act, and share their feelings, stop others from doing similar acts, and protect the community. The set forth above review indicates that society tries to punish all offenders who commit index crimes. Whether a sentence is carried out or not is exclusively law enforcement and judicial authority’s tasks and only statistical appraisal can confirm it, which is beyond the scope of this assignment. An inde x crime is committed willingly and non-index ones are perpetrated non-willingly. Non-index crimes consist of non-physical confrontation. For example, violation of liquor laws is a non-index crime, which does not cause pain, loss and suffering to another person. It is a non-index crime. ... The concept of utilitarian theory is: Does consequence (result of punishment) relate to the happiness of the largest number? Punishment in this theory works for the prevention of future crime. Retributive theory is past oriented and it seeks retribution from offenders for their crimes. It also conveys to the offender that the purpose of the punishment is to impose moral responsibility, and punishment does not account offender's future conduct. The salient feature of the above analysis points to the fact that society is more eager to punish those whose crimes consist of physical confrontation. We can conclude that non-index crimes are punished less often. The described above definition of the index and non-index crimes states that index crime consists of physical confrontation and non-index crimes consist of non-physical one. For example, homicide, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault cannot be committed without physical contact with the victim, while fraud, forgery, gamblin g, drug abuse, and disorderly conduct do not involve physical contact. That is why index crime, as a whole, causes more physical harm and financial loss than a non-index crime. According to the FBI report, property crimes in 2011 resulted in estimated losses of $156.6 billion (â€Å"Crime Statistics for 2010†). Part II The criminal justice system in general uses two punishment theories: utilitarianism and retributivism. The first theory states that criminal laws’ purpose is to prevent future harms while the following states the purpose is to punish past wrongs. Retributive justice has undergone different criticism. One of them defines that punishment for the same crime is different in different jurisdictions of the same country.

Connecticut local Government Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Connecticut local Government - Research Paper Example ne at the Lincoln Basset School in four areas: academics, culture, talent and climate and operations noted that the school was below standard in most areas. Shahid (2014) stated that divide among staff, lack of basic resources, such as white boards and projectors and chronic absenteeism among students was the reason for the poor performance. The school was added to the State Commissioner’s Network for underperforming schools so as to significantly improve through collaborations between the state Department of Education and local stakeholders.(Shahid , 2014) Prior to finding the article I did not know that it was an issue within my community. When reading the article what amazed me was how the afterschool program has impacted positively to the kids as it serves as a catalyst for them to indulge into other avenues other than being closed with no exposure. I believe I feel this way because the program can help chronically low performing school rise. If I lived in my classmates’ community, I would ensure that they make use of their afterschool time to be doing something productive and impact their lives positively. I am saying this because many at times students engage themselves into bad behaviors like smoking and drinking alcohol. Shahid. The dimensions that determine the quality of services Term Paper

The dimensions that determine the quality of services - Term Paper Example There are three dimensions that determine the quality of services which are: responsiveness, empathy and assurance. This paper will describe the dimensions. To avoid confrontations, most clients do not make direct complaints to businesses when not satisfied with their services. A more significant reason is that they are not accorded a convenient channel to complain and believe a complaint will not yield effective results in terms of a solution (Goetsch, 2010). To improve service quality and retain clients, attract new ones, and generate more business with the existing ones, service managers should encourage them to complain when things go wrong. This will clear the clients’ perception that organizations do not care to correct mistakes while demonstrating the willingness of the service providers to be helpful (Goetsch, 2010). Many organizations rely on the traditional, reactive recovery problem solving methods, where the process is initiated by the clients. However, the proactive methods where the organization initiates the process are more effective. Clients should be asked questions on how services may be improved and encouraged to use suggestion boxes and comment cards. With this approach and attitude from the providers, clients will have the comfort of knowing they are dealing with an organization that is willing to be helpful and responsive towards meeting their expectations (Goetsch, 2010). Organizations that do not display a willingness to help through effectively responding to complaints add to their service failures by failing the clients repetitively. Business organizations need to respond to clients’ requests and complaints by providing prompt and efficient services (Bhat, 2010). Timely deliveries convey a sense of responsibility and urgency and help build a client’s confidence and encourage repeat orders. Punctual responses also demonstrate to clients that their concerns are also the organizations concerns and they are given priority

Abstract Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Abstract - Assignment Example Modernization is a positive step forward, but what about what we leave behind? Building new, technologically-advanced and expensive cities cannot alleviate poverty or reduce the income gap that is expanding every year. According to Cohen, large cities like Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Bangkok follow the unsustainable blueprint of grander projects at the expense of equity. Cohen (55) argues that growing cosmopolitan jungles like Delhi are also joining the fray by ignoring the poor and giving more power to the privileged. Cohen cites sources that highlight poor sanitation, health, housing and unemployment are the undercurrents that define 21st century cities. Sadly, these same issues were present in 19th and 20th century cities, but we have chosen to continue the trend instead of stopping it. Which begs the question, how long will we keep it going? How long do we think the poor can continue watching opportunities being given to the rich? A solution is needed; urgently. Results: Cohen argues that the events of the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street and Cabalgata de los Indignados show that we are sitting on a time bomb that will destroy everybody; the rich and the poor. As much as these events were politically motivated, social conditions played a huge role in their occurrence. The fact that they took place in major cities of those countries is another reason to worry. For example, why did the Occupy Wall Street protesters not go to Denver or Washington? The answer is because New York has enough frustrated people to sustain such a drive. We need to start designing urban 3.0, the cities that will gradually do away with the inequalities inherent in our current white elephants. Cohen’s analysis and arguments are based on past experiences and credible sources that support his claims. According to Cohen, this is not to say that urban 3.0 will solve all our problems, but it will reduce them significantly. It is all a matter of good planning

Life of a Chinese Farmer Essay Example for Free

Life of a Chinese Farmer Essay If I were a Chinese farmer in 2006 I would be continuing my livelihood that I have done all of my life even when I was a child helping my family. I later got married and I now have 6 children ranging in age from 4 to 18. We all live in a village called Xinzhuang (Village of Xin) in China. This is a farming village that is about 1481.3 miles outside of Shanguani, China that is the closest well known city. My typical day starts out at 7:15 AM when I get up and eat breakfast with my family and then I go out into the garden and pick the vegetables that are ready and we use these vegetables for our dinner that evening. Then I have time to do some other things around the house including laundry and household repairs that need to be completed. Our normal meals consist of rice and vegetables unless I have the money to purchase some meat from one of the small shops in the village. For entertainment we normally visit with others in the village, sing songs, and occasionally we are able to access the internet, and watch television. The biggest concerns that I have for my family is are we going to have enough food and is our farm going to be taken over and built on so that we don’t have enough room to grow our vegetables. I also worry about my family and their health because we do not have a doctor in our village. We must travel to Shanguani for any healthcare issues that arise with our family. Components of Effective Teamwork

Components of Effective Teamwork There are many components of effective teamwork such as communication, cohesiveness, commitment and collaboration among members to confronting problems directly, coordinating efforts, managing conflict and making decision via consensus, which requires some time compromisation (Heineman,1994). According to Zander,1994,team goal are desirable state of affair members intend to bring about through combined effort. A clear understanding of groups objective through well-articulated goals is the most common characteristic of successful team (Larson and LaFasto, 1996).The team member had never been together before the assignment given. The team established a common purpose that is decided to complete the given task with the allocated time. The team member was randomly selected and joined together, the members undergo the 5 stages Tuckman theory, accomplishing group assignment. In every team, there are team composition needed for a team to work well. According to Guzzo Dickson (1996), composi tion refer to the nature and attributes of team members.Whereas there are large and small groups or team within organization, the important point the composition of the groups or teams. According to Hackman, 1987 the effective team need members who have relevant expertise, interpersonal skills and moderate differences in their background. In a way, there is no point of including many people into a team or group if they do not have complementary relevant skills to contribute to teams goals. Other than that, in many group or team, what generally happen is that individual get appointed onto team where they feel they are wasting their time in the meeting rather than being a contributing member. Thus, it is imperative that a team has combination of the right mix of workforce, expertise right people skills. In discussion of the group assignment, there are different value embed in three main ethics in this group(Malays, Chinese and Indians) including non-assertive, good manners, cooperati on and harmony; trust and relationship building. These values will to some extent influence group norms and cohesiveness (Abdullah and Low, 2001). Apart from that, it is imperative that members understand their roles in their teams or groups. Roles are expected behavior pattern attributed to someone occupying a given position in a social unit (Robbin Judge, 2007).There are many roles that member that members can play within their team or group. According to Margerison and McCann (1990), there are nine roles commonly played by group. Robbin and Judge nine roles include Linker, Creator, Promoter, Assessor, Organizer, Producer, Controller, Maintainer and the Advisor. Each team role has particular strengths wan weakness which is essential for team member to identify themselves and more importantly they need to match the roles with their skills and preference for compensating each other weakness with their strength. Moreover, cohesiveness will bring about positive effect to satisfaction and communication. In teamwork context, it is important that all team members build cohesiveness through understanding and respects of each others roles and contribution trying to accomplish the group task and goals. People who are part of cohesiveness groups are more satisfied than are member of non-cohesive group(Hackman1992).Group cohesion also helps to reduce stress because members are supportive to each other .Effective team work have norms that support high quality performance and a level of group cohesiveness that provide social support to its members. Effective leaders are those who personal qualities enable them to articulate a vision for a given group. It is therefore important that the leader, by his [or her] behavior manifest a loyalty to the needs and aspiration of group members. These things must matter to him [or her] in ways that to view because such evidence of good faith sincere accessible serve to elicit greater acceptance of influence. ( Hollander,1964,pg231;). In addition, Hollander found that, In order the group to function as effectively as possible, the leader needs to be attuned to the need of followers, the perception and expectancies,(1995,pg75).In other words, when followers trust a leader, theyre willing to be subjected to the leader actions, for they are convinced that their rights and interest will not be neglected. Besides effective leadership, an affective membership is also important to achieve successful teamwork. Team membership performs its task then is better able to perform the next task assigned to it. The main reason in forming a team is to complete given task. Not only that, it is also helping maintain good social relations, promotes its members personal and professional development. Therefore, it is essential for member require the right type of people, good internal group process and understand team dynamic to work towards a common goal. This is the social relations, group maintenance, or viability aspect of teamwork (Sundstorm, 1990).For creating effective membership, there is necessary diversity of knowledge and skills. Management teams with members of different backgrounds are more innovative that homogenous team. (Guzzo and Dickson, 1996)

Impact of Computer Technology on Modern Society and Culture

Impact of Computer Technology on Modern Society and Culture Establishing the Foundations of Modern Computer Systems In 1812, mathematics professor Charles Babbage laid the foundations of modern computing when he recognised the relation between machines and mathematics, machines performed tasks repeatedly without making mistakes, while mathematics often requires the repetition of particular tasks or steps. Ten years after making his discovery Babbage began the development of a machine that would have been the first general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. The construction of the Analytical Engine was never finalised during Babbage’s lifetime, but a century later to determine if the machine worked and it did. None the less the concept was a breakthrough in technology at the time as it outlined the required elements of the modern computer system; perforated cards containing operating instructions that acted as input devices, a memory that could store up to a thousand numbers, a control unit that could process the instructions in any sequence and an output device that would produce printed results, the essential elements of the modern day computerised system. The Modern Era The past fifth-teen years have seen major changes to many aspects of modern society and how we carry out our everyday activities and tasks, all through the means of computer technology. Many new innovative technologies have been developed that have altered of our daily life. We are now considered to be living through the Information Age, and the decisive technology of this age would have to be the Internet. It would be rare to find an organisation or household that does not experience the use of the Internet. The Internet can be used at home, at work or on the move depending on what device you are using. The New Speed of Information Knowledge Consider the speed at which we can now access almost any piece of information as computers and the Internet have made the dissemination of information and knowledge easier and much faster. The Internet provides this by connecting a computer to networks and using applications such as web browsers and search engines to access information, the Internet stores this information in the form of databases and webpages. Previous to the availability of the Internet people would have to request information by sending a letter, ask someone who knows the answer, read literature or make a telephone call. Digital Communities The Internet has created new forms of communication that are cost-free and much faster methods of gaining that sought after piece of information. Online community forums or message boards enable members to communicate with each other by exchanging tips or discussing topics. They can save information posted about a particular topic for other people to view at any time, therefore creating a discussion environment where everything that gets posted can be read numerous times. These virtual communities differ from traditional conversation as the interaction between members does not happen in real-time, forum members will often consider their comments before making a reply, helping to ensure that high-quality information is shared. A popular forum will have valuable members who are knowledgeable about many topics and will usually try to show this in their posts, this creates knowledge and useful tips for other members of the website. Forums can establish online communities, since people often return to the website on a regular basis to check previous posts or catch up on what has been happening since the last time they logged in. Building relationships with other members of forums is easy, if you regularly post and discuss topics then other forum members will get to know you and in turn you will get to know other members. Online virtual communities are rapidly replacing the physical community in society, an attraction of the online community is that members interact with other members of similar interests. Many people believe that there are negative effects from activity participating with online communities. They believe that members of these services often have reduced ability when interacting with their traditional community, this is due to the fact that members do not need to reveal their true identity. Members often remain anonymous as they can contribute thoughts and ideas under an online identity or avatar. Anonymous members can change their name, gender, appearance, occupation, sexual orientation and many other aspects of their personal details. For many shy people this can be a positive reason for becoming members of online communities, but if a person does have difficultly integrating with the traditional community then surely continuing to participate with online communities will not resolv e this issue. Social Networking Media The past five years or so have seen the introduction of social networking websites which allow users to connect with each other and share information in various formats. The emphasis in social networking is on two-way communication, not only can you publish information but your readers can comment on that information. Although the original users of social networking were computer-literate people who were publishing information for a small audience, this has changed dramatically. The creation of social networking and social media websites such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Instagram and YouTube have attracted massive audiences. These websites can allow you to find and connect with fellow workers, a relative located at the other side of the globe or a school colleague from many years ago. There are millions of people sharing information in the form of blogs, millions of videos uploaded to YouTube and billions of images shared on Flickr and Instagram. Participating with these new electronic environments can make you feel like you are part of a large community, but they also have downsides. Today’s youth have perhaps been particularly affected by social networking and computers as an entertainment source in general. As music, video, games, images and all forms of media can now be stored and viewed on home computers and devices, many modern teenagers are now sitting in their bedrooms playing video games, talking on message services or updating their social networking webpages. This is believed to be leading to a form of isolation that could affect their ability to interact with others later in life. Social networking and media has proved advantageous in times of disaster and emergency, by providing on-the-ground information in a disaster area or providing community support. This medium has become a vital part of disaster response, filling a void in areas where mobile phone technology has lost service. For example as Dina Fine Maron states in her article, How Social Media Is Changing Disaster Response, on scientificamerican.com: â€Å"Hurricane Sandy slammed the eastern seaboard last year, social media had become an integral part of disaster response, filling the void in areas where cell phone service was lost while millions of Americans looked to resources including Twitter and Facebook to keep informed, locate loved ones, notify authorities and express support. Gone are the days of one-way communication where only official sources provide bulletins on disaster news.† Cyberbullying Cyberbullying can also take place in the electronic environment of these social networking websites. This involves predators posting messages of an intimidating or threatening nature, either anonymously or posing as a person the victim trusts. Children are often vulnerable to cyberbullying attacks, which can have devastating effects and leave deep mental scars. Many of these attacks have been documented in recent news and media articles, unfortunately many of the victims have been driven to suicide. Cyberbullying has spread vastly among the youth of today, a 2010 CBS News report suggested that 42% reported being victims (As stated by whoever it was on whatever website this was). Social networking and media has become a matter of concern for employers, managers and business owners now use the tactic of monitoring employee’s social networking and media webpages. Some job terminations have been the result of unsuitable content being contained on employee’s webpages or posting comments that speak unfavourably about the business they work for. It is considered that some companies are over restrictive about their policies regarding blogging, posts on social networking websites and the uploading of various media. New Shopping Methods Business Methods The rapid advances of the Internet has revolutionised the shopping behaviours of consumers and the way many companies now conduct business activities. Shopping in the business to customer environment is becoming increasingly popular for many people, this is due to the numerous benefits and the convenience that the Internet offers. If you are a modern business owner, your business needs to have an Internet presence as the Internet provides access to a potentially global customer base. The Internet has help create many entrepreneurs who have entered the online market with a good business idea and benefited from the low start-up costs. Many barriers and obstacles involved with starting a traditional physical store have been removed, in fact many people than run an Internet business from home while holding down a full-time position. Unlike high-street shopping, consumers are not restricted to the traditional model of shopping within store opening hours as they can make purchases 24 hours-per-day, seven day-per-week. Store location is no longer a concern for consumers, as enquiries or transactions regarding any product or service provided by a company can be made any time, from almost any location across the globe. They no longer need to wait in queues for long periods of time waiting to purchase a popular item on sale or push a shopping cart around aisles trying to locate a desired item. The Internet and websites allow consumers to click through navigation menus or use a search box to narrow down their search. Consumers can make purchases from the comfort of their home or on the move with the use of smartphones and other mobile devices. As Peter J. Bentley writes on page 11 of his book Digitized: â€Å"You switch on your computer and launch the Internet browser. A one-word search for ‘pizza’ finds a list of pizza restaurants in your area. One click with the mouse and you are typing in your address to see if the restaurant delivers. They do! And they also allow you to order online. You choose the type of pizza you feel like, adding your favourite toppings. The restaurant even allows you to pay online, so you type in your credit card number, your address, and the time you’d like the delivery. You choose ‘as soon as possible’ and click ‘pay’. Just thirty-five minutes later there is a knock on your door. The pizza is here, smelling delicious. You tip the delivery guy and take your pizza to your table to eat.† I believe Peter has described perfectly in this extract from his book, how the Internet has changed shopping habits for millions of people across the world. The disadvantage of this new convenience is that many local high-street shops are disappearing from the high-street and many large businesses are going out of business. This of course has a negative effect on local communities as they are indirect stakeholders connected with many of these local businesses. Local businesses experiencing success provide a good-feel factor and more importantly jobs for local communities. The Labour Force The continued evolution of computing suggests that they will be programmed to provide more convenience for us in the future, and hence society will continue to be deskilled in many different aspects. For example, even with the invention of the simple calculator we have deskilled our mathematical abilities. This deskilling due to the advancements in technology have an impact on the labour force and market, technological change that requires the skills of highly educated workers increases the demand for these workers, whereas innovative change in technology can reduce the demand for workers with skills based on redundant technology. This situation has been repeated throughout history and was a direct effect of the industrial revolution. During the 18th and 19th centuries rapid advancements in technology changed the way people lived and worked, mass production techniques meant the construction of many large factories with large workforces. This did create new forms of employment, but it also deskilled much of society as these new jobs involved repetitive monotonous tasks, hence reducing the demand for skilled workers. The industrial revolution resulted in work being more regimented and less skilled, many consider this a comparison against today’s current information revolution. Computer technology is moving at a pace that is outrunning the ethical issues that surround its use in the workplace. Employers have been seen to establish ethical boundaries that infringe on employee privacy rights and restricting communication abilities. Accessibility of the Internet allows employees to access personal email and talk to family and friends in various different ways. Employers believe this effects the employees focus on tasks at work and has led to many employers observing employee communications during working hours. An ethical dilemma has developed from employers viewing employee’s personal data that has led to courtroom action being taken against employers, employee job termination and many complaints being filed. The innovation of new devices like portable laptops and smartphones has meant that working from almost any location on the globe is possible with the use of a Wi-Fi connection. For many employees this has shifted the traditional eight-hour working day, again another issue of ethics. As computer technology now provides employers with the ability to make requests of employees at any time of the day, does it mean that it is correct ethical thing to do? The modern working day is transforming into a 24 hour experience. Another issue of ethics that arises in the modern workplace is the ownership of company equipment. Problems arise when employees decide to make use of equipment for non-work related purposes, which could possibly include searching for a new job or accepting personal communication. Employers must define clear policies when using company equipment in the workplace and when loaned to an employee, therefore creating an ethical standard when using equipment. Pervasive Computing The terms â€Å"pervasive computing† and â€Å"ubiquitous computing† refer to the embedment of microprocessors in all everyday objects from household appliances, to a pair of glasses, to clothing, and so on so that information can be communicated. This new method of data collection will involve the combination of wireless technologies (such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), electronics and the Internet. The objective of pervasive computing is to create smart products that will communicate information continuously without interruption, while being connected to the Internet where the collection of data is easily available. Ethical debates have arisen from the purposed development of pervasive computing, privacy issues as personal information could be viewed and the effect this new technology may have on the labour workforce. For example, the replacement of electric meters with smart meters (which record electric usage to the Internet) have resulted in the deskilling of workers who would have manually read and recorded the electric meter figures. Another example of how modern technology has replaced employees with a more convenient method of performing an everyday task, after-all we no longer need to answer the door to the worker who would have inspected your meter, the process is now automated. Privacy stands as the main barrier for the long-term success of pervasive computing. The computer technology is now trying to understand if the current privacy principles that exist in the industry are a true reflection of the ordinary member of society. What are users concerns and preferences about the management of private information and what procedures should be installed that will ensure satisfactory implementation. The main advantage of pervasive computing is that it will improve efficiency from a practical standing. Cloud Computing: Technology of the Future From the knowledge gathered while conducting this research project, I have decided to conclude the report by discussing Cloud Computing, the computer technology I believe will have the most dramatic affect society and culture.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes :: Expository Essays

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes Back in my high school, one day out of the month was dedicated to student-led clubs. On these so-called club days, most kids will go to any club just to get out of class. Some exclusive clubs, such as the Chess club, would look down on this. These groups would happily kick some kids, but there was one club happy to see everyone who came: the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The little exposure to Christianity found at this club was all that some kids would get and the moderators of my school’s club knew this. Little by little, this is FCA’s nation-wide goal: to change the world into knowing Jesus Christ. This non-profit organization is responsible for everything from small club meetings in middle schools, high schools, and colleges, to massive summer camps. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’s website lists the group’s mission which is to present the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church to athletes and coaches and all whom they influence (FCA). No matter whether on the court or in a group-led bible study, FCA focuses on this mission. FCA’s home website is www.fca.org. This site is very well done and contains an abundance of information, such as the organization’s values: â€Å"Our relationships will demonstrate steadfast commitment to Jesus Christ and His Word through integrity, serving, teamwork and excellence.† FCA's goal of Integrity states that we will demonstrate Christ-like wholeness, privately, and publicly. For the goal of serving, we will model Jesus' example of serving. As for Teamwork, we will express our unity in Christ in all our relationships. Lastly, for excellence: we will honor and glorify God in all we do (FCA). FCA’s in-your-face style of doctrine is pretty effective. Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest interdenominational, school -based, Christian sports organization in America. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

Transformation: Randle McMurphy & Patients Essay -- Essays Papers

Transformation: Randle McMurphy & Patients He waltzed into the ward and introduced himself to every patient as a gambling man with a zest for women and cards. Randle P. McMurphy, a swaggering, gambling, boisterous redheaded con man, arrived at the ward from the Pendleton Work Farm. He was sentenced to six months at the prison work farm, but pretended to be insane in order to obtain a transfer to the hospital because he thought it would be more comfortable than the work farm. Bromden senses that there was something different about this new patient. After his first experience with the excruciating routine of the Group Meeting, McMurphy tells the patients that Nurse Ratchet is a genuine â€Å"ball-cutter.† The other patients tell him that there is no defying Nurse Ratched because, in their eyes, she is an all-powerful force. True to his nature as a gambling man, McMurphy makes a bet with the other patients that he can make Ratched lose her temper. At first, the confrontation between Ratched and McMurphy provides some humorous entertainment for the other patients. However, McMurphy’s confrontation soon becomes their confrontation as he draws them into the conflict by encouraging their rebellion. The success of his bet hinges on a failed vote to change the television schedule so they can watch the World Series. The Series was on television during the time allotted for cleaning chores. McMurphy and the other patients staged a protest by sitting in front of the blank television in...

Comparing Jack and Macbeth

Comparing Jack and Macbeth Jack is an authoritative boy whose leadership attributes was used to manipulate the others rather than provide order. He wants complete control, by using his superiority and savage-Like ways. When the tribe was created, It works out of fear, but It Is this tribe that prevails. When Jack can no longer control his urge for leadership, the tribe Is created, which has a negative influence on all the boys. Through this character, Gilding shows how the evil side of society prospers. While the savages were thriving while the few who remained civilized were suffering from extreme famine, and taught. Jack seems to be a power-hungry individual. Jack rapidly gets in charge of the hunters that had to gather the meat for the whole group. Their enthusiasm decides to hunt a pig, and this is when Jack shows his savage personality. Before starting to hunt a pig Jack orders the hunters to paint their own faces with clay in a native manner. This all foreshadows the savage that is about to corrupt the island. Jack shows an attitude towards life that is shown by the people that succeed in the world. With his salvage attitude he Is encouraging aggressiveness, and maintaining his ewer and respect from the rest of the group. He becomes paranoid that Ralph and Piggy are against him and feeds misinformation to his tribe, so as to keep them on his side. Jack Is the complete opposite, representing the evil that lies In the hearts of all mankind. He progressively grows more sadistic and evil as the story goes on, eventually orchestrating the death of Simon and Piggy. Macbeth is also similar because he turned evil by listening to the raging ambition within his own personality.Macbeth let himself be manipulated by the three witches, and allowing him to be influenced by his wife's equally raging ambition, this caused many problems like a guilty conscience. It was due to the evil within him and his wife, as well as evil personified in the three witches that Macbeth kil led his own king, two guards who just tried to do their Job of protecting the king, his best friend Banquet, and Macadam's defenseless family. Additionally, that evil led him to bring pain and suffering on a mass scale to the entire Scottish nation. In conclusion Macbeth evilness was caused by their ambitions to be leaders, and disappearance of rational thinking, which caused problems with themselves internally, and affected other people. Macbeth is a very egocentric, power-hungry leader. He starts off by being a loyal follower to his king, hesitant to act against Duncan. Macbeth has the ambition but lacks the drive to do what is necessary. However, after he becomes king, this attitude changes greatly. He becomes like a dictator. Had Macbeth been a good, able leader, the revolt against him by Macadam, would not have been so fierce.Macbeth becomes very proud, because of his false prophecies. He degrades those who express fear or concern, and e waves off important Information given to him. His whole concern is keeping his power at all cost. He's so self-involved and ready to compromise his morals to get ahead. Macbeth knows that Macadam Is trying to oppose him so he hires people to kill Macadam's family. No democratic leader would do that, so Macbeth Is demonstrate that he will not have mercy on those who try to oppose him, Leadership Increases for Macbeth because not only he was successful in killing the king but he got the throne. N authoritative leadership approach. Macbeth kill others that can become a threat o him which shows that he is capable of doing much more than he seemed, but can't trust people. He killed Macadam's family to show his initiative. Macbeth is more determined to accomplish his goals and make decisions on his own. Macbeth is being a leader by making his own decision, but he does not listening to anyone else's input which can make his decision one-sided. This type of leadership can ultimately be destructive because of bad decisions, and his initiative has led to an evil path. He is much more assertive than before.Macbeth did exemplify more determination and energy; however a true leader is not Just powerful and strong. Macbeth did seem to be more courageous when he said that he does not fear anyone and shall kill anyone that stands in his way. When he says this he seems to be more arrogant than confident. Macbeth shows a lack in confidence because he feels that to be safe he has to murder everyone. If he were confident then he would not feel the need to harm anyone. Despite everything, he continues to stay positive and is determined to do whatever he needs to do; in order to maintain his leadership.Macbeth on the there hand shows leadership, however in a much more negative way. Jack on the other hand is similar to Macbeth because Jack is an autocratic tyrant. He beats a boy for no reason other than to exert his power over the boys. He realizes what it takes to get power and to keep power. He rules through fear and int imidation, Jack is also a good manipulator. He knows what the boys both fear and want to hear. Unlike Ralph who desires a constructive society, Jack prays on the boys' destructive primal instincts. The boys want to be told what to do rather than simply pitch in together; hey feel the need to live in fear under a leader that they perceive as a powerful protector. In this sense Jack is certainly a more effective leader than Ralph. Jack can be controlling. One example is when Ralph asked his hunters to take care of the fire but Jack didn't want that and he took the hunters to hunt because that's what he wanted them to do. Another example is when he takes a vote for the next chief. No one votes for him but he sets up his own tribe nonetheless. Jack's litany of evil is pretty impressive. He leads the brutal slaughter of a pigs, and Simon.

Police and Law Enforcement Response

A house Divided: Abortion and Slavery in America

In 1856, Lincoln stood out as he opposed the sovereignty doctrine and emancipation for states to choose whether to continue practicing slavery or impoverished all of their slaves. His assertion was that the country had to make up a choice either to continue with slavery or make the slaves free in all states. This was ground on the understanding that all the states were bound by one constitution. For the country to stand as one, it had to make a single choice. Today the country is beingness faced by the debate of pro fill-in and pro-choice. To the pro-choice, the decision to lay aside or terminate the lie of the unborn nipper is remaining on the hands of the m early(a) duration the prolife believe the unborn child make merrys the same arights effective as any other person (Melton, nd). These monstrous divisions have the potential to split our country along the line of whether to grant the rights to the mother or the unborn child. In two(prenominal) cases, proponents of a nti slavery and pro life had and have a moral argument against an detestation that divests our society of an obligation to protect the life of the unborn just as we protect the living. It is definite that in that respect can non be any middle ground in the case relating to stillbirth. We need either to fully support the pro-choice and continue blatantly putting to death the confounded young sympathetics who have no force out to defend themselves. On the other, hand we can embrace the logic of the pro-lifers and give the unborn children a chance to enjoy the right to life and other rights later when they take the light in their lives. Just as in the case of slavery, the pursuit of our rights should not be allowed to deprive other humans their equal rights. The law should bring out straight and define the fact that, final stage the life now is no different from expiration it later. By then the question of whether we are killing through miscarriages shall have been answered .ReferencesMelton, B. (nd).A house Divided abortion and thrall in America. The article notes four set forth around which the arguments for twain abortion and slavery similarly revolve as advocates of both practices justify their actions. In rejecting the arguments of the pro-slavery and the pro-choice camps on very(a) grounds, the author admonishes society not to replicate its past tense mistake. In the first premise, slaves and in utero children are being regarded as properties. Since they are both properties, it is presumed that their throwers retain the right to dissolve what to do about them. Slave owners, therefore, have the right to do whatever they want to do with the slaves that they own and significant women should be allowed to decide whether to keep or abort their own fetuses. The second premise involves the economics of the spaces, i.e. slave owners, in particular, and the nations economy, in general, profit from the labor of the slaves while women turn to abortion in order to escape the burden of raise a child under conditions of abject distress especially when the child is unwanted for whatever reason.Third, both the slave owners and the pregnant women argue that their actions are virtuously acceptable under specific conditions when the slaves acquiesce to their situation and the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother. Finally, both the slave owners and the pregnant women claim that they are only doing what is best for the slaves and the fetuses. In the former case, owners argue that slaves have better credentials if they remain slaves because the owners feed and protect them than when they are freed and left by their lonesome to face the harshness of the world. In the case of the fetus of a poor woman, abortion is considered a humanitarian assurance that the child does not experience the evils of life of poverty. The author rejects all of these premises on the ground that they are one-sided. In other words, only the slave owners and the pregnant women are enable with the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The author argues that by denying the same rights to the slaves and the fetuses would be to deny them of their humanity as well. Therefore, the author maintains that both slavery and abortion could not be considered morally right since these practices deny the slaves and the fetuses (who are also considered human beings in the eyes of the law) of their human rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.ReferenceA House Divided Abortion and Slavery in America. hamper to order 71203674.
